The Dickumentary
Everything you've always wanted to know about penises but were afraid to find out!
Cultures have worshipped it, and circumcised it. Men have sought ways to make it larger. Across 14 countries, featuring interviews with more than 40 experts, ‘The Dickumentary’ tries to answer some of the greatest questions of our time, like: What happened to Jesus’ foreskin? Why do Hindus worship Shiva’s lingam? And, does size really matter?
The film features a rollicking tour through Japan’s annual phallus festival, an inside look at a penis church in Montreal, and an up close exposé of penile augmentation surgery in Beverly Hills. It’s an entertaining, comprehensive tour de phallus that's taking the internet by storm.
What began as an innocent inquiry into circumcision ballooned into a much larger project. Everything’s a pun in this territory, so no point in even saying they’re not intended.
This was easily one of the most fun projects that Capital K Pictures has undertaken. We had the opportunity to interview experts from a wide range of fields, and to travel from South Korea, India and Japan to Iceland, Egypt and Greece. Although the title and the tone are lighthearted, we hope that people find it genuinely informative, giving insight into some interesting scientific and historical knowledge.
Our team of two (left: Sofian Khan, Director, right: Evan Manners, Sound Recordist) was on the road for weeks at a time to gather the material for the film on a tight schedule. It so happens that the springtime phallic fertility festivals in Japan and Greece, for example, take place in the same week — so we went straight from one to the other.
The two of us travelled throughout the course of the year for this project. We made a short video as a sort of mini-travelogue, using the sync sound clap to cut to a song we recorded at a party in Greece that Evan, a talented musician as well, remixed.
After premiering at the Atlanta Film Festival, ‘The Dickumentary’ was acquired by Breaking Glass Pictures for North America, and represented for sales in Europe by Cat&Docs. It can be watched on Amazon or on the Capital K Pictures Vimeo on Demand page.
We also created a lot of additional short content that went out onto various online platforms to help promote the film. One of the other short pieces went viral on the New York Post, where it racked up more than 8 million views. This is a standalone piece that was produced separately from the film in collaboration with “penis photographer” Sarah Doolbaz.
And a few others are essentially excerpts or remixes of content from the film itself in shareable bite sizes:
